On Faith

One of the many programs that Buckner has in Peru is the transitional home for girls aging out of the orphange system.

The house in Lima has seven young people who receive complete care and have an opportunity to obtain a higher education.

One of the girls is Zoila. She has had a very hard life. She was the victim of abuse and exploitation when she was very young, and at 15 she was admitted to a government shelter where she felt completely abandoned.

The experiences of her life have definitely left a mark; she became distrustful, sullen, always defensive and hardly smiled. However, when we found out about her desire to study hospital techniques we decided to bring her to the program. She deserved a chance to heal, feel loved and above all to know God.

The road has not been easy, I remember the day she had her first Bible class. She fell asleep. There was a point where I had to consider asking her to leave the program because she had done something wrong that was very serious. I talked with the staff we decided to let her stay. She deserved a second chance.

In December 2009, Zoila finished her studies as a nursing student. Today she is a loving, happy young girl who is letting go of the pain from her past. She is participating actively in Bible studies and has let go of the distrust in her heart.

This is just one of the stories I have witnessed since I became a part of the large Buckner International family. To see the transformation of a person who was so hurt is a blessing that makes us more humble and grateful for who we are, what we have received, and especially the opportunity to be the hands of God to serve those who need it.

Claudia De León is the country director for Buckner in Peru.

Prayer Requests:
- God, help us be good at encouraging those who are downtrodden.
- God, thank you that all of us have opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others. Help us not pass up those opportunities.
