Content Whatever the Circumstances

Ending 2010 with the Kenya Christmas trip was such a blessing to my life.

As a former missions coordinator, I have had the privilege of loving on orphans throughout the world. Even so, the Kenyan children hold a special place in my heart.

I have asked myself why these children are so dear to me, and I have come to realize that their smiles, joy and friendship exalt Jesus Christ in a way that challenges me to live differently.

Their genuine joy is not based on circumstance, but on being truly CONTENT in what God has provided. Even in difficult conditions, Kenyans still find room for laughter and inexpressible joy.

This reminds me of Paul’s words: “For I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances” (Phil 4:11).

What a wonderful attitude of the heart! If we could all learn to be content and give thanks to God for what he provides daily, what an amazing difference this would make!

How freeing it would be to live above our circumstances, not allowing bitterness, anxiety or anger to creep in and take control, but rather to experience God’s supernatural peace in the midst of trials and daily difficulties. What a difference this would be!

1 Peter 2:19 says that it is commendable to God that we bear up under hardships and persevere. Contentment in all circumstances is pleasing to God.

Since this attitude does not spring up easily within our hearts, let us consciously make a decision to thank God for all things. In the beginning it will be a mechanical effort, but the more we give our gratitude to God, the more our hearts will learn to be content. And just like the children in Kenya, we will overflow with contentment and be joyful in all circumstances!

Jessica Garcia was a missions coordinator for Buckner for almost five years. She and her husband are now full-time missionaries.

Prayer Requests:
-God, help us as we strive to be content in every circumstance.
-God, continue to bless the people of Kenya and meet their needs daily.
