Each of us has special gifts that make us unique children of God. As an organization, we are made up of talented people: some creative, others organized and many great communicators. We have all wished we could be better at something, worked hard to improve and yet always seemed to come up short.

In the book, “Now, Discover Your Strengths,” Marcus Buckingham challenges us to focus on our natural gifts instead of areas needing improvement. A couple of years ago our leadership team took the test in his book and it was amazing how each of us has unique gifts that blend to make a complete team.

Over time teams change, but God always opens doors to bring in just the right person with the just the right gifts to make our ministry work. As part of its great team, Buckner Retirement Services has  great residents with a rich assortment of gifts. Some residents love exercise and share their enthusiasm with those around them, causing other residents to become engaged in exercise classes. Other residents love painting or bird watching and help lead life enriching activities by sharing their gifts.

One of the newest residents living at our recently-opened GreenRidge at Buckner Villas, Pauline Zoeller, discovered one of her gifts when she was 4 years old. As Pauline recounts the story, Dr. Buckner would come by her church in Burnet, Texas, and tell of the orphans in Buckner’s care. Pauline was so impressed with Dr. Buckner that she would give her allowance of one penny to Buckner. Over the years Pauline continued her faithful giving as a parole officer, adoptive parent, volunteer and Buckner donor.

It doesn’t matter if your gift is a penny, time volunteered or a career devoted to what you are passionate about. It does take all of us to make this great ministry of Buckner happen. Thank you for your gifts and the heart behind them. As a team ordained by God we can carry this ministry forward as we strive to touch more lives.
