Called to Listen
Last month in the Mission Center a mom with five children, the oldest being 14, came needing assistance. She seemed very upset, and as I was walking her though the center to get her clothes she began sharing her story with me.
A few days before Thanksgiving, her 14-year-old daughter told her she was pregnant. She felt lost and angry, both at her daughter and at God.
I just let her talk. I felt that she was doing more than just talking about facts in her life. She was expressing the depths of her heart and the things that had been locked up there. She was hurting badly.
She asked me, “What did I do wrong?!” I sensed this was an opportunity from God and I began to minister to her.
I told her sometimes it doesn’t matter what we do for our kids. When it comes down to it, they are their own person and they will likely make bad decisions that don’t reflect on her parenting.
In tears, she said she didn’t know what to do. The other clients had left the Mission Center and it was just me and this sobbing mother and pregnant daughter. I felt from God that the very thing this woman needed, even though she was mad at God, was His special touch.
I said, “I cannot let you leave like this. Would you like me to pray for you?” She said yes. So I prayed for a clear mind and for peace over her heart and life.
A few days later I saw her at a school activity. She approached me! She told me, “Thank you for listening to me, and for taking the time to pray with me.” She then began asking questions about what church I attended.
This experience reminded me that we’re not only meeting physical needs. We are ultimately here to minister to people’s souls whenever the Holy Spirit leads.
Prayer Requests:
- God, make us ready this week to minister to people in exactly the way they need. Give us the wisdom to know when to listen and when to advise.
- God, be with families who feel lost and overwhelmed by their circumstances. Give them your peace and comfort.
