As foster parents, we hear this statement all too often. What a slap in the face! Are foster parents’ hearts too small to feel the pain that fostering can bring? Not at all! In fact, it is quite the opposite.Â

God calls us to take action and love these children. Matthew 25:37 reads, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” We are to love them with our whole hearts, as He loves us.

These children walk into our homes already having experienced the world’s brutality. As we care for them and work on their healing, something even more miraculous happens. We find ourselves seeking God like never before and growing in Him. Foster parents have to be willing to abandon themselves to God and trust in Him to provide all they need and desire. They must be willing to hand their hearts up no matter the outcome.

We have just begun our foster care journey and I’m quickly learning that God is in control and I’m not. I must hand my heart back to Him on a daily basis while fighting the urge to take it back and stow it away in an indestructible box.

I have faith in an extraordinary God. Throughout my life He has shown me that He can bring beauty from ashes. I know that glorious outcomes and growth come through the difficult journeys.

God has called my family to nurture, love and protect these children. We must be willing to break our hearts to heal theirs.Â

Clay and Mikki Funderburk have been married for 14 years and live in Longview. They were blessed with three children both biologically and through adoption. They are new to Buckner and are enjoying their first two foster placements. They look forward to watching what God has in store for them through their foster care journey.

 Prayers of the Week:
-God, thank you for the big hearts of foster families who serve hurting children. Comfort them when their hearts break and give them joy as they see their foster children experience healing.
-God, be with children who are suffering from abuse. Rescue them from their abusers and help them to heal fully.

Editor’s Note: In honor of National Foster Care Month, we are featuring stories from some of our foster families. If you’d like to learn more about the ways you can Be a Family to a child please visit www.beafamily.org.

As a young girl, I always dreamed of marrying “Prince Charming” and having the perfect little family. As time went on, I did marry the man of my dreams. But the “perfect little family” never came.

A few years passed, we tried fertility treatments that did not work, and then we began to see a fertility specialist. During this time, I know God spoke to me, and I surrendered to His will. I was moved by Proverbs 3:5-6, which says:Â “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

I gave up my desires to have my own biological children, and He gave me a peace that surpasses all understanding.

My husband and I immediately began attending information meetings for foster care and chose Buckner as our agency. Within six months we had completed all our training and requirements. We became a foster-to-adopt family.

Three days after receiving our license, we welcomed two precious angels into our home. They lived with us for almost 15 months. At times, it looked like we were going to be able to adopt them, but God had another plan. We said goodbye to our two angels this past March. It was the hardest thing we have ever done.

We re-opened our home within a few weeks and received our 5-day-old “Li’l Bit” a few days later. I was able to pick him up from the hospital. We do not know how long he will be staying with us, but we just enjoy each day we have with him. God placed him in our home for a reason.

I know without a doubt that my husband and I are doing what we have been called to do. Becoming foster parents has completed my ideal “perfect little family.” I get to share my home with many special little people.

I have only one regret… I wish we had started fostering sooner.

Andrea Chambers and her husband have been a licensed foster family with Buckner since December 2010. They live in Mesquite, Texas, and are currently fostering their third child, a beautiful and sweet newborn baby boy.Â

Prayers of the Week:
-God, we ask for your strength, peace, and grace in the lives of those who have answered the call to serve children as foster parents.
-God, thank you for calling us to play a part in Your redemptive work.

I was 17 years old and had just gotten off of an eight-hour drive up a mountain to Xela, Guatemala. It was my first trip overseas and I had no idea what was in store for me.Â

The kids at the orphanage knew we were coming, and were so excited they were lined up at the front gate anxiously waiting for us to arrive. We could hear them long before we got there as their excitement triggered yells and clanging behind the gate that separated us.Â

Once we entered the orphanage, each of us was enveloped by several kids at once, wanting to touch us, know our names or just look into our eyes.Â

I had never seen or smelled anything like what I experienced inside this orphanage. These kids had little to nothing and the living situation was like nothing I had ever seen in America. Regardless of their surroundings, each child had a huge smile plastered across their face at the sight of new visitors.Â

That’s when I noticed a small girl off to the side, about 10 years old. She was alone and crying.Â

I approached her, asked her name and tried to make conversation the best I could with what Spanish I knew. She did not respond much, but I quickly found out it was her first day at the orphanage.Â

She was so scared and overwhelmed with the longing for her mother and her siblings. After this first conversation, this little girl never left my side. That day she was truly in need of someone to walk beside her and comfort her through this transition. I knew this little girl was why God had sent me to Guatemala.

After spending a week in Guatemala my heart had been transformed, and the Lord had shown me my passion and plan for life. Since then I have been on five other trips overseas to three different countries. Buckner has provided so many opportunities for me throughout the past couple of years to serve God in the way that I was called to.

Allie Gerlach went on a mission trip with Buckner Missions.Â

Prayers of the Week:Â

The game also is a great metaphor for leadership in service for Jesus. As I step aside as the leader of Buckner, I hope to be an excellent follower of our new leader, Dr. Albert Reyes. I am supremely confident that Dr. Reyes is uniquely equipped to lead Buckner International for the next generation.

Being a follower means I will pray for Albert and all the leadership of Buckner. I commit to be available as a volunteer, advocate and encourager. To the staff of Buckner, my co-workers who have made my life what it is today and who have blessed me every day for these past 18-plus years, thank you. I have been blessed to have been the fifth president of Buckner, and each of you — whether you’ve been a Buckner financial supporter, a co-worker, a trustee or a prayer supporter — has honored me and this ministry with your trust and support. Linda and I will continue to share our financial resources with Buckner ministries throughout the world.Â

The best leaders are followers even when — especially when — you can’t anticipate the outcome. It requires trust and faith that our Lord can work in other’s lives His wonders to perform. Jesus said it this way, “True leaders must go to the back of the line.”

Kenneth L. Hall served as the fifth President and CEO of Buckner from 1994-2010, and as CEO from 2010-2012. Ken will retire April 30 after nearly 19 years of service to Buckner and those it serves.  Â

Prayer of the Week:
-God, we pray for the leaders in our lives, in our country and around the world. Give them the wisdom and strength to know and do your will.

One of my mission teams to the Dominican Republic was given a gift the day we arrived: Out of the 32 bags that were checked at the airline counter on Saturday morning, 31 of them did not make it to Santo Domingo.

To make matters worse, the single bag that made it was mine. That was an awkward trip leader moment, being the only person with clean clothes and all my stuff.

Fifteen team members had the chance to spend three whole days traveling with only the items in their carry-on bags. “Togetherness” happens when women have a limited number of clothes and three bathrooms. We shared shorts, T-shirts and pajama pants from our carry-ons (and my lone suitcase) to replace the luggage that was still in an airport somewhere.

On the third day, the bags arrived. Everyone was so excited to have their stuff for awhile, but as I sat listening to them unpack, I heard: “I can’t believe I packed this much stuff. That was unnecessary.” After a couple of days of wishing for the comfort of clean and familiar clothes, everyone could see what was truly important.

These mission trips are my job–my actual, full-time job. I’ve seen a lot in the last five years and have traveled with more mission teams than I can count. But never have I seen a team form such genuine friendships so quickly. Getting over ourselves just makes us better at ministry. Nothing else could have fostered the community that could be seen in that team.

Again and again, God displays His love in ways that simply don’t make sense to us. Like lost luggage.

Susan Williams is the director of missions support for Buckner Missions in Dallas, Texas. Â

Prayers of the Week:
-God, we thank You for the abundant blessings You shower over us each day.
-God, please bring our minds back to Your will and purpose when we are focused on life’s inconveniences or wrapped up in our own discomforts. Help us to love and serve You gladly at all times.

It can be easy to focus on outward appearances. We look at the things people do and determine whether or not we think they are good or bad, sincere or insincere, deserving or undeserving. But do we really look at their hearts?

We judge others by comparing them to ourselves. Somehow it makes us feel better – like we’re not so bad after all. And it makes it easier for us to justify and minimize our own sins and failures.

But how are we showing a lost world the love of Jesus Christ when we respond to others in this way? Do we even understand what it means to love like He loves? Sometimes I think I might have grasped it, and then I get a glimpse of the unfailing love Christ has for me and realize that I haven’t even touched the tip of the iceberg in understanding how wide, how long, how high and how deep my Savior’s love is for me.

When we begin to see others through His eyes, our judgments are replaced by mercy and our outrage is replaced by compassion. We begin to see that we are all just as capable of committing the same kinds of evil we see take place all around us. And we acknowledge that it is only by His grace that we have been saved from doing the very same things.

How humbling it is to reach this point in your walk with Him! He did not choose me because of anything I have accomplished or could offer Him. He chose me before the foundations of the world only because of His love.
-God, give us wisdom to look past outward appearances and into the heart.
-God, we praise You and thank You for rescuing us, though we did nothing to deserve Your mercy and grace.

With two girls in the family already, everything had to be considered, including the living arrangements, cost of care, our ability to emotionally handle whatever circumstances might arise and, most importantly, could we give the child the chance in life they would truly need?

Was God really asking us to consider this option? Were we being impatient? We knew we had to be honest with ourselves and make sure we truly believed we could provide a waiting child with the home he or she deserved. We also had to make sure we sensed in our hearts that this child was supposed to be “one of us.”

Meeting with our social worker to discuss the waiting child list helped us. We worked through a medical condition worksheet that forced us to be real about what challenges we felt would work within our family. After our social worker left, we had a total peace about what was in front of us and began looking almost daily at the waiting child listings. We knew it would be clear to us which child was supposed to be our child.

The day we saw our son for the first time on the webpage, my wife and I broke down in tears. She found him first and sent me a message at work. I logged in and she did not even have to point him out to me. As soon as I saw his face I knew which child she would direct me to.

Four months later, we traveled to Korea and brought him home. He has taught us how to be more loving, less self-centered and the joy of life itself. He is a perfect fit for us and our lives would truly be incomplete without him.

God calls us to love the fatherless (Isaiah 1:17), and there is no better way I can think of than building your family through adoption.

Prayer of the Week:Â Â
-God, we ask for your grace and mercy on the children in the world who live without the comfort and protection a parent provides. As their Heavenly Father, protect and guide these children, that they may grow to love and serve you.

Brokenness is a permanent fixture around us. It can be our bodies, the family unit or the community we live in or drive through. Ultimately, all of humanity is broken, yearning to be healed.

Thinking through these things, I read Ezekiel 37, the third vision God gives and one of the most famous passages in the book. It is called “The Valley of Dry Bones.” As I read, my heart was stirred for the Lord by the work He is doing through Buckner as a minister of healing in this broken world.

The vision tells of Ezekiel being led throughout the broken community–think of orphaned children, natural disasters in need of humanitarian aid, lonely widows, lost souls, impoverished communities and broken families. The scripture speaks of the total hopelessness; it is even asked in verse three, “Can these bones live?”Â

As God and Ezekiel talk, God tells Ezekiel to prophesy healing through God’s words. The restoration seems pointless and impossible. Ezekiel’s obedience leads to the Lord saying: “I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the LORD.” (English Standard Version Ez. 37:5-6)Â

In Ezekiel’s obedience and by God’s mighty power, the bones come together; life comes into them and they stand on their feet as an exceedingly great army.

As I read those words, I couldn’t help but think of all of the programs Buckner provides in the midst of brokenness–Community Transformation Centers, forever families, after school programs, feeding programs, spiritual formation, job skills training and humanitarian aid. I was overwhelmed and thankful to work for an organization that is used as a breath of life into the broken things of this world. We believe the bones can live!

“Wait for the Lord; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the Lord.” Psalm 27:14

Transitions and new beginnings are full of opportunities to experience God. More often than not we seem to miss out on those experiences, because we are so easily distracted by the things of this world. Our minds are filled with expectations and culture has created an atmosphere of “going” and “doing” that keeps us running.

The world tells me I need to work a certain number of hours. I need to have a high level of productivity to demonstrate my worth. I need to keep all the plates spinning, and in the meantime I need to be aware of who to impress. We seem to fall into these patterns over time. But during transitions and new beginnings, a brilliant opportunity is before us!

What I’ve discovered in this recent process of developing a new program for Buckner is that God has moved me beyond myself and my abilities, where the only place I can cling is to the cross and God’s promises. What a sweet place to rest!

In the past, I’d been missing out on this because I was capable. I trusted in my education and my training to get the job done. I felt assured in my personality and character to impress those around me and to enable me to do my job with excellence.

But launching a new program for Buckner has not gone as planned. There have been hurdles, and at times I’ve found myself feeling helpless and having lost sight of the end goal. And in this place God rushed in and revealed a beautiful reality!

Our most valuable work is when we have bruised knees because of our constant position of prayer. We are most productive in the simple act of being still and waiting on the Lord. When we run ahead of God, we miss out.

Today I remain in a position of waiting on the Lord, for He has brought me into this place, He has rescued me and He delights in me!

What if your new beginning started today? What if you allowed yourself to be still and know that He is God?   Â

Lee Anne Bingham is a counselor for Buckner Children and Family Services in Dallas, Texas.Â

Prayers of the Week: Â

-God, help us to find quiet in our hectic lives to sit in stillness and reflect on Your promises.

-God, we praise You for Your faithfulness in all things.

“It is good to give thanks to the Lord and to sing praises to thy name, O Most High.” Psalm 92:1Â

Since being with Buckner, I have had the pleasure to learn about Buckner’s past and all of the great lives that Buckner has impacted from its rich heritage.

Last fall, I attended the annual homecoming event for our alumni on the Dallas campus. I heard incredible stories from people who literally spent their entire childhood on our Dallas campus. It was a great time to see and hear the close connections and relationships that span not only immediate family, but beyond.

One experience in particular caused me to pause and to be reminded of Psalm 92:1. The alumni had gathered in the campus chapel to remember others that had gone on to be with the Lord. Immediately, people stood up to remember and speak about those who were their friends and “family.”

It was such a moving experience to see and hear about the goodness of the Lord and to hear praises to God in the lives of people during difficult times. Not only that, it was clear that all praise went to the Lord for his goodness and graciousness in their lives.

What a great reminder today to pause and give thanks to the Lord, and to take the time to “sing praises to His Holy name” daily in our lives. Let me challenge you today, take some time to “sing praises to His Holy name” in all things!
